Why is this significant?
- Girls are less likely to be diagnosed as autistic than boys.
- Statistics show that boys are 4 times more likely to have an official diagnosis.
- Lots of autistic girls become too anxious to attend school, both before and after diagnosis.
- Girls can be diagnosed as autistic up to 6 years later than boys.
- Reasons for this include masking (someone hiding that they are autistic) and diagnostic criteria being focused on traditionally male interests like cars and trains.
